Get spreadsheet templates andd learn how to use spreadsheet budget templates to simplify creating a personal or household budget.

Spreadsheet templates are worksheets that simplify creating a budget spreadsheet with rows, columns and formulas already formatted for you. You can edit the formatting and formulas in templates if you wish.

Below is a collection of budget templates for the spreadsheets discussed in Spreadsheets for Your Budget. When downloading from the Internet use anti-virus and firewall software.

Microsoft Works users: You will find budget templates in Works Tasks.

Pear Budget

Pear Budget is a very comprehensive free spreadsheet budget template with more detailed budget worksheets. Pear Budget offers monthly budget worksheets with instructions for use and works with Excel and Open Office Calc.

  1. Go to the Pear Budget web site and click 'Download it now' to download the zip (compressed) file, noting where you save it.
  2. Extract the zip file by locating it and double-clicking on it. Double click the extracted file to open it with Excel.
  3. To open the Pear Budget template with Open Office Calc, open Calc first then use File, Open and locate the extracted file and click on it.

Microsoft Excel Templates

Microsoft offers a variety of free Excel budget templates, but you must choose a template that works with your version of Microsoft Excel (you cannot open an Excel 2007 template in Excel 2003). You need to use Internet Explorer and will be prompted to install ActiveX if it isn't already on your computer.

  1. Go to Microsoft Office Budget Templates.
  2. Click on a budget template then click Download Now.
  3. Excel will open in a few seconds with the template loaded. To keep the template, save it in Excel.

Family Monthly Budget Worksheet

This budget template is very simple and straight-forward, listing months and editable income and expense categories. Family Monthly Budget Worksheet adds up total income and expenses by month and reveals if you are over-budget. Use this template with Excel, Calc or upload it to Google Spreadsheets.

To download: Go to Family Planning Toolkit and click on Family Monthly Budget Worksheet link, then follow the General Download Instructions below.

Home Budget Worksheet

Home Budget Worksheet is a budget template divided by income categories, tax deductible expenses and non-deductible expenses, and it has a Help tab with instructions for use. Home Budget Worksheet opens in Excel and Open Office Calc (you may have to tell Calc to allow macros).

To download this template, go to the Home Budget Worksheet and click on 'Download Now', then follow the General Download Instructions below.

General Download Instructions

  1. When prompted to open or save the template, choose Save to Disk, click OK.
  2. Note the name of the file you are downloading (i.e. template.xls) and the folder you are saving the template to.
  3. Open either Excel or Calc, then click File, Open and locate the template file in the folder it was saved in and click on it to open.

Open Office Calc

The Open Office Calc Template page offers many budget templates, with RunningBudget being the easiest to use and Personal Money Management Template being the most comprehensive.

To download a Calc template:

  1. Select a template at Open Office Calc Templates by clicking on [ots] or [ods] next to the template title.
  2. When prompted to open or save the template, choose Save to Disk and click OK.
  3. Click in the box next to 'Save in:' and double click the folders in this path: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\OpenOffice.org \user\template.
  4. Click on Save.
  5. In Calc, click File, Templates, Edit and select the template to open it.
