It may sound like an overwhelming chore, but it's possible to create and maintain a budget in a few simple steps. Follow the money and keep more of it.

Many people often find themselves struggling to keep track of where all their money goes. Or worse, discover their bank account is empty with days still to go before payday arrives. No matter how much money is earned, there never seems to be any extra funds to set aside.

If this sounds familiar, it may be past time to develop a budget. Without it, it may soon be necessary to learn the secrets of debt management, which is a much more complicated mission. Although creating a budget can seem like a daunting undertaking, it's really not very difficult and the benefits realized will be well worth the effort. In just a few simple steps, budget mastery will seem like second nature. Ready? Let's begin.

Document Spending and Income

The first step in successful budget management is to identify how much money is coming in and how much is going out. The first part is as simple as documenting all earnings for the past few months. Factor in any additional income, including regular bonuses or other payments received. Average them out to determine the monthly intake.

The next step, unfortunately, involves a bit more legwork. It requires gathering all monthly bills, including mortgage/rent, utilities, credit card statements, etc. Also, it's important to factor in any non-monthly bills like insurance payments. For those expenditures that are not automated or captured in a statement, like that routine morning coffee, carry a notebook and jot down those transactions as well. Again, it sounds tedious, but after a few short months, the chore of documenting where every penny goes will be worth the effort.

Once all the information has been gathered, it should be entered into a simple spreadsheet with two columns. The first column will contain each monthly intake. The second, which will unfortunately be somewhat longer, contains all outlays. It is helpful to group the spending column by category. For example, a category for dining out (an easy one to reduce) in addition to other categories, including cable bill, groceries, etc. will be required.

Reduce Spending

Now that there is a thorough understanding of where all the money is going each month, it's time to identify areas to cut back. Some cutbacks will be easy (brew coffee at home and give up a few of those premium cable channels), while others will take a bit more work (call the insurance company to see if they can apply any discounts). Also, nobody should be afraid to contact credit card companies to negotiate for lower interest rates. These are just some of many money saving tips people can incorporate into their everyday money management plans.

Practice Fiscal Responsibility

Now that all the spending has been thoroughly documented and ways to save have been identified, it's imperative to maintain the momentum. The hard part is already out of the way. Now, keeping track of spending each month and maintaining a frugal lifestyle will be much easier to achieve.

This budgeting process won't always be easy. It may be difficult, at times, to keep spending in check. However, nobody should let temporary setbacks get them off track of their budget management goals. Just recognize them for what they are and move forward with the plan. In time, anybody can begin reaping the rewards of successful budget management.
