Budgeting to pay household bills without focusing on when payments are due is detrimental to any budget. Using online bill pay can ensure that bills are paid on time.

Budgets are great guidelines to help manage household finances. Not paying off monthly debts on time can have negative consequences financially. It is possible to pay on each bill every month, and still incur late charges and additional fees. Here are a few household budgeting tips for using online bill pay to save money.

Late Fees

Paying utility bills, credit cards, and installment loans late will result in a late fee. Many budgets are set up to pay bills on payday, not when the bill is actually due. It may be necessary to readjust a budget to ensure that bills on paid in full by the scheduled due date. Credit card late fees can cost anywhere between twenty dollars and forty-nine dollars. Paying late can also result in a lower credit score.

Payment Processing Fees

Many people fall into the trap of paying for bills in between the due date and disconnection date. This choice forces that they payment be made in a way that is convenient only for the company collecting the debt. Options to pay this bill could be to pay in person, or use a third party payment processor. The company may require that users pay a small fee to pay for processing their payments. This convenience fee is usually under five dollars. However, continuously paying this fee each month could cost sixty dollars annually in payment processing fees. Multiply this fee by several different bills, and hundreds of dollars are being thrown away.

Online Bill Pay

Gather all of your household bills. Prepare to pay each bill with online bill pay. Type in the company name, account number, and any other identifying information necessary to have the payment credited properly. This will be the same information that would be written on a check. Log back in seven to ten days before the payment is due, and send off the bill. In the event bills have been paid late in the past due to waiting on a paycheck, find additional income. Earn income from an additional job or home business. Use the extra income earned to stay ahead on household bills. Put forth additional effort to pay bills on time. Being consistent will allow extra income for vacations, investments, and savings.

Sending in all bills prior to the due date will save thousands of dollars over time. Break out of the habit of paying at the last minute. Use these tips to save money by using online bill pay.
