Use an income and expenses spreadsheet to track personal finances. Get free Microsoft Excel monthly budget templates. Download & customize an example expense worksheet.

One of the hardest parts about creating a budget is setting up the tracking system. Simplify that step by downloading a pre-made income and expenses spreadsheet to track personal finances instead of starting from scratch.

Sample Income & Expense Spreadsheet

The Vertex42.com website offers a handy household budgeting spreadsheet. This file can be used with Google Docs, Open Office, and Microsoft Excel (versions 2002 – XP, 2003, and 2007).

The Excel spreadsheet is already pre-populated with common household income and expense items. To use the spreadsheet, input monthly amounts in the budget and actual columns, and the spreadsheet will calculate the surplus or deficit by category. At the top of the worksheet, total income and total expenses are compared so users can see the net monthly surplus or deficit at a glance.

Other Example Monthly Budget Spreadsheet Templates – Microsoft Excel Compatible Downloads

The resource profiled above is just one of many free Excel monthly budget templates available on the web. Other examples of monthly expense worksheets are profiled in the articles below. All of the files can be opened with Microsoft Excel.

Beyond Example Expense Worksheets – Ways to Simplify Personal Budget Recordkeeping

In addition to downloading a pre-made income and expenses spreadsheet, there are other ways to simplify the household budgeting process. One trick is to use a foolproof method of tracking daily expenses. There is no one best method because everyone is different. Here are some expense tracking ideas that may work for different individuals, depending on personal preference:

  1. Throw receipts into the car glove compartment and tally them at the end of the month. It only takes a second to open and shut the glove compartment, and although the expense receipts wont’ be organized, they will be in one place at the end of the month.
  2. Keep an envelope in a purse or wallet. Similar to the first method, place receipts in this envelope as the month progresses.
  3. Only use a single bank debit card or credit card for all expenses and download statements at month end.

Use a Free Excel Monthly Budget Template to Track Personal Income & Expenses

Once a sample budget template has been downloaded, the next step is to use the Excel file to keep track of income and expenses as part of an overall household budgeting plan. For some monthly budgeting tips, see the article How to Budget – Balance Monthly Income and Expenses; this article describes a simple personal budgeting technique.
