Free Microsoft Excel Budget Spreadsheet Tracks Family Income & Expenses
This Excel household budget spreadsheet (entitled “family monthly budget planner”) compares projected versus actual monthly income and expenses. When used correctly, this budget template tells the user how well the family fared in each budget category as well as in total.
The following categories and items are listed for line-by-line comparison (in order of appearance in the spreadsheet):
- Housing – first mortgage or rent, second mortgage (if applicable), phone, electricity, gas, water & sewer, cable, waste removal, maintenance or repairs, supplies
- Transportation – primary vehicle payment, second vehicle payment, bus or taxi fare (if applicable), insurance, licensing, fuel, maintenance
- Insurance – home, health, life
- Food – groceries, dining out
- Children – medical, clothing, tuition, school supplies, organization dues or fees, lunch money, toys or games
- Pets – food, medical, grooming, toys
- Personal Care – medical, hair and nails, clothing, dry cleaning, health club, organization dues or fees
- Entertainment – videos or DVDs, CDs, movies, concerts, sporting events, theater tickets
- Loans – personal loans, student loans, credit card charges
- Taxes – federal, state, and local tax
- Savings or investments – retirement, investment accounts, college savings
- Gifts and donations – spaces for three charities are listed
- Legal – attorney fees, alimony, payments on lien or judgment
On the income side, this household budget spreadsheet leaves room to compare projected to actual income from primary and secondary incomes plus an extra income category.
Microsoft Excel Household Budget Spreadsheet Categories
The categories above are fairly comprehensive, but certain common expenses appear to be left out while others appear unnecessary. For instance, many families carry disability insurance (AD&D coverage), which is not mentioned above. On the other hand, a family will most likely not incur housing maintenance and repair costs if they rent. Also, for children, tuition and toys usually don’t go together; grade school children in public schools won’t incur tuition costs, and college students won’t need toys. Luckily, these line items can be customized in Microsoft Excel before use.
